Things I will miss whilst I’m away

The 11th Doctor Who starting on TV

Sporty stuff:
Plenty of mountain biking (well, depending on my back & coccyx…)
The end of the football season, FA Cup Semi Finals & FA Trophy Final (but I’ll just be back for the FA Cup final, so the Villa had best avenge the Stamford Bridge defeat…).
London Marathon & the 2011 London Marathon ballot
The Grand National
BTCC races at Thruxton and Brands Hatch

Music stuff:
Record Store Day (get down to your favourite local independent retailer on 17th April)
New album releases from many, but particularly: the Bluetones, Jonsi, Doves, Broken Social Scene, Unkle
Gigs: Band of Horses at Koko; the Bluetones at the Forum, Camden Crawl, British Sea Power Tan Hill festival; Gorillaz (& half of the Clash) at the Roundhouse; Ash (featuring Russell from Bloc Party), Olof Arnalds

Oh, and food (!!):
Proper tea, Cadbury’s chocolate, Bovril, Stilton, roast beef & Yorkshire pudding
(Still gutted I can’t say Kit-Kats, but they’re responsible for killing orang-utans, so no more for me til they get that sorted out).

Finally, there will probably a little thing called the General Election (assuming Gordon will wait until April 7th to call it for May 7th – I’ve got a proxy voter lined up).

I can’t wait to go on The Big Trip. Two days to go!

As you’d probably imagine, I’m reading plenty of travel books (not just guide books) before I go.

Today, I particularly like this:

‘to give my decision a symbolic flourish, I took my first steps of the new year on the back of an elephant […] it’s height gave me a perfect opportunity to enjoy the world from a different perspective.’

(A Fortune Teller Told Me, Tiziano Terzani, p.31)
